If you know me, my first “real post” about coffee makes perfect sense. Charlotte is a gold mine for delicious coffee, but some of the best coffee is located on the outskirts of the city. The places you will read about are underrated and unique greater Charlotte area coffee spots that satisfy every beverage craving. Many are drive-thrus for quick, quality coffee in a rush, and others are perfect for sitting down, hanging out, or studying.

Wild Roots Coffee
Canal Coffee
This hidden gem is a personal favorite. Canal Coffee Co is located in Charlotte, Concord, Gastonia, and Morganton. Canal is drive thru only, which is perfect for those that love a quick grab and go coffee. Canal truly satisfies every craving between coffee, tea, smoothies, lotus energy drinks, and delicious and quick breakfast and lunch. They offer signature drinks such as the Peach Cobbler, unique add-ons such as the protein cold foam for cold brews, and their seasonal menus are always on point. My personal favorites are the salted caramel chai, white chocolate raspberry breve, which is their Valentine’s coffee special, spicy sausage biscuit, and spinach and feta stuffed pretzel. This place is an easy must try!

3695 Concord Pkwy S, Concord
853 N Green St, Morganton
3648 S New Hope, Rd, Gastonia
Clutch Coffee
Clutch has many similarities to Canal as far as the drive thru, coffee, energy drinks, but they are not as heavy on food selections. I drive 25 minutes just to get coffee from here on the weekends and I have never been disappointed. Clutch coffee has two locations in Mooresville, right by Lake Norman. If you ever wanted to recreate my dream day, order an Iced Dream Bar from Clutch then drive five minutes to the lake and paddleboard. The Mooresville location’s five star reviews say that it is a must stop location for all daily commutes and fast and friendly service with yummy drinks. Clutch also has delicious smoothies that are perfect for a summer day by the lake. They also have locations in Indian Trail, Winston Salem, Clemmons, and Greensboro.

Willow Wood
If you are looking for a cozy, earthy, coffee shop with delicious breakfast and lunch, Willow Wood is perfect for you. In the heart of Main Street, Cornelius, Willow Wood offers an extensive sandwich and food menu with incredible signature drinks. My favorite is the tiramisu and the ham and brie panini.

Mac Tabby Cat Cafe
Half coffee half cats! Mac Tabby offers specialty coffee drinks and a room with sweet kitties to play with. They take reservations and walk-ins in NoDa, Concord, and Salisbury. Almost 2,000 cats have been adopted from Mac Tabby and the cats still in the cat lounge are so sweet. Their specialty drinks include smoothies, coffee, tea, Italian sodas, kombucha, and baked goods, and the money goes straight to caring for the cats. My favorite coffees are the maple blondie latte, samoa cookie latte, and lavender coconut latte. Mac Tabby is a must visit in Charlotte!

Summit Coffee
Summit Coffee is a North Carolina favorite and is continuing to expand locations. Originating in Davidson as the Basecamp location, Summit has blossomed into Huntersville, Mooresville, Davidson, and seven Charlotte locations: Highland Creek, Plaza, NoDa, Southpark, Eastover, Ballentyne, and Wilmore. Each location fosters social connection through events and encourages outdoor adventure. If you want to enjoy live music with your coffee, the original 4.6 star reviewed basecamp location has a vibrant patio for events and connection. The Davidson farmers market is walking distance from the patio, and coffee, flowers, and live music sounds pretty unbeatable!

Another coffee for a cause… The Grounds Cafe and Bookstore. Located in Mecklenburg Community Church, all proceeds from The Grounds go towards volunteer projects and the Church’s local and global partnerships, such as Crisis Assistance Ministry, Second Harvest Food Bank, and Hope Vibes. The friendly staff, books, and delicious coffee on the cheaper side give the place a soul of its own, earning the 4.9 star review. Let your coffee do good!

If Undercurrent could be described in one word it would be intentional. With fresh pastries baked from scratch and turning coffee into an educational experience in their coffee lab, Undercurrent takes pride in the intentionality behind fresh sourcing and roasting. There are two Charlotte locations, one in Plaza Midwood and the other in Optimist Hall. The freshness of their coffee is truly unmatched.

Burr and Berry
Burr and Berry live up to their motto of local, fast, and kind. The drive-thru coffee is perfect for a commute, but also for experiencing the peace of a coffee shop. You can find them in Lower Southend and North of Matthews (NoMa). Their vanilla silk latte is the best vanilla latte I have had!
